FOREIGN TRAVELERS
The JR East Rail Pass is a special discount ticket for travelers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sight-seeing purposes only. Travelers with working, student, trainee, entertainer, cultural, government (military) visas will not qualify for the JR East Rail Pass.

The "Temporary Visitor" entry status/stamp is the only valid stamp which will qualify travelers to use the JR East Rail Pass. According to Japanese Immigration Law, "Temporary Visitor" status allows a traveler to stay for up to 90 days.

If you do not have a non-Japanese passport, you may not buy any pass other than the JR Universal pass.
 
 
 
 
   
   
 
If you purchase a PASS outside Japan
Purchase an Exchange Order before you go to Japan.
After you arrive in Japan, present your Exchange Order to obtain your JR East Rail Pass.
 
     
 
If you purchase a PASS in Japan
You can purchase a PASS in Japan from any JR East Pass exchange/sales offices. You must show your passport and return air ticket or the like at the time of purchase.
 
 
 
   
   
 
PERIOD
 
 
1.
5-Day Pass or 10-Day Pass: Are valid for a period of 5 or 10 consecutive days, respectively, beginning on the first day of use of the Pass.
2.
Flexible 4-day Pass: Usable on any 4 consecutive days within a month from the date the Pass was issued. (Each date on whic the Pass is used will be stamped on the Pass at the respective station's ticket gate or aboard the train.
3.
Once the Pass has a starting date of validityperiod, the date cannot be changed.
 
     
  LINES OF SERVICE
 
 
RAILWAYS
Valid for travel on all railway lines of JR East:
Limited express trains (except private compartments or berths)
Shinkansen trains
Express trains (except berths, etc.)
Local trains (except "Liner" / "Home Liner")
If you want to use the cars or trains referred to in parentheses above, you must pay the respective additional charges in addition to the limited express or ordinary express charge. In this case, the Pass is valid for the basic fare only.
If you want to use a sleeping car train like "Hokutosei" on the Tohoku line, you must pay the basic fare for IGR Iwate Ginga Railway (Morioka-Metoki) and Aoimori Railway, in additin to the limited express charge and the sleeping car charge.
 
     
 
  NOTE:  
 
Passengers using trains traveling on non-JR East lines must pay the respective additional charges. Also, The JR East Pass is not valid for the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen lines.
 
 
 
 
   
   
 
Seat reservations can be made without additonal payment. To make a reservation, apply at any major station or Travel Service Center (View Plaza) or a reservation office (midori no madoguchi) at a JR East station. There, present your PASS, and obtain your reserved seat ticket before boarding.
 
 
  NOTE:  
 
When reserved seats are full, you should use a non-reserved seat. In this case, no refund can be made of the price difference between a reserved seat and a non-reserved seat.
 
 
 
 
   
   
 
No items appearing on the Coupon may be altered.
 
 
 
   
   
 
An Exchange Order can be refunded (according to the regulations of each issuing office) only at the same office that issued the Order within one year after the date of issue.
A Pass can be refunded only within a validity period and before the first date for ist use (for a Flexible 4-day Pass, before it first usage) at an applicable JR East station having a JR East Pass exchange/sales office. (10% of the price of the Pass will be charged as a handling fee)
No refunds can be made for any reason on or after the designated starting date.
No refunds are made on Passes in the event of train non-operation, delay, etc.
 
 
 
   
   
 
Neither an Exchange Order nor a JR East Rail Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen. Please take precautionary measures to ensure its safekeeping.
 
 
 
   
   
 
These and other usage conditions follow the JR East passenger transportation regulations and Japanese laws. The validity of an Exhcnage Order during the period before it is submitted for a JR East Rail Pass, however, shall follow the stipulations and regulations of the company that issued the Exchange Order.

Use of the Pass in violation of these conditions and regulations will render it void and confiscated; and a sum of three times the fares and charges for the entire sections traveled will be collected.

  NOTE:  
 
A JR East Rail Pass cannot be used in an automatic ticket-reading gate.
