The JR East pass is valid for all 72 railway lines of JR East. If you're staying in the northeast including Tokyo, this may be the pass for you.

Children under six years of age may travel free of charge if they do not occupy a seat i.e. are seated on their parent's or care giver's lap. Otherwise, they will need a Child Rail Pass.
Prices are based on a fixed yen price and fluctuate according to the current exchange rate. Prices are subject to change. Additional mailing fees may apply.

There are no special amenities available in First Class seating, but it is more comfortable than Coach Class. All seats in First Class must be reserved prior to boarding and can be arranged for at time of Rail Pass exchange. Reservations can also be arranged for at JR ticket station offices or Midori-no-Madoguchi (Green Windows) for days during Rail Pass validity. There is no additional fee for reservations.

RESTRICTIONS
Holders of the Green (first class) Rail Pass are allowed to ride in both Green (first) and Ordinary (coach) class cars. They are restricted from private compartments (Green and Ordinary), and sleeper cars. Rail Passes only cover the base fares of the sleeper car trains. Holders will be required to pay for the express surcharge and berth charge to ride a sleeper train.

Coach Class Seating is quite comfortable and offers travelers greater flexibility than First Class Pass users during high holiday periods and rush hour. Coach Class, in most cases, comes both in reserved and non-reserved seating options. As with all First Class Seating, there is no additional fee for reservations, but for those who wish to travel with reserved seats, must arrange their reservations prior to boarding. Travelers who opt to travel without reservations can make their way to the train platform, showing the Pass to the Ticket-taker, and lining up at the marks on the platform where non-reserved cars will pull up. These areas are clearly marked, and car doors will line up according to these marked areas.

RESTRICTIONS
Holders of the Ordinary (ordinary class) Rail Pass may only ride in Ordinary (coach) class cars, free of charge. As with the Green (first class) Pass, Ordinary (coach) Passes cover only the base fares of sleeper trains. Holders will be required to pay an additional fee to cover the express surcharge and berth charge.
